When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot?
If you’re expecting a little one, you might be wondering:
“When is the best time for my maternity photoshoot?”
From my experience photographing mamas in Atlanta, the ideal window is usually between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. This is when your bump looks beautifully round, you’re still feeling comfortable, and we can capture maternity photos that truly celebrate this season of your life.
Every pregnancy is unique, so let me break it down and help you plan the perfect session.
Why 28–34 Weeks Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos
I usually recommend scheduling your maternity photoshoot between 28 and 34 weeks.
Here’s why this window works so well:
- Your baby bump is visible and beautifully shaped
- You’re often still comfortable enough to stand, move, and pose for photos
- Swelling and fatigue are usually more manageable
- You have time to plan the session, outfits, and styling
This window helps me, as your Atlanta maternity photographer, capture your glow and create maternity photos you’ll treasure forever.

Should You Book Earlier Than 28 Weeks?
If you schedule a maternity photoshoot before 28 weeks, your bump may be smaller—especially for first-time moms.
Some mamas prefer subtle, early-pregnancy photos. But if your goal is the classic, full bump maternity photos, waiting until 28 weeks is usually best.
Is It Too Late After 34 Weeks?
Sessions after 34 weeks are absolutely possible, but I always keep a few things in mind for comfort and safety:
- You may feel more fatigue or swelling
- Posing and movement can be harder later in pregnancy
- Baby could arrive earlier than expected
Even so, many moms still get gorgeous maternity photos after 35–36 weeks. It just requires a little planning to make sure you feel comfortable the whole time.

First Pregnancy vs. Second (or Third)
How soon your bump shows can depend on whether it’s your first pregnancy or not:
- First-time moms often show later, so 30–34 weeks is often ideal
- Second or third pregnancies tend to show earlier, making 28–32 weeks perfect
I’ll help you figure out the best timing so your maternity photos highlight your bump beautifully.
Studio vs. Outdoor Maternity Sessions
Whether you choose studio or outdoor maternity photos, both work beautifully within the same timing window—the difference is in the style and feel.
- Studio maternity sessions are perfect if you love a timeless, clean look and don’t want to worry about the weather. I have a list of beautiful studios to choose from, all offering soft light and a calm, comfortable space.
- Outdoor maternity sessions are great if you’re drawn to natural scenery or a city vibe. Georgia offers stunning options, from water views and greenery to charming North Georgia towns. My favorite time for outdoor sessions is sunset (golden hour) for soft, glowing light.
No matter which style you choose, I’ll guide you so your maternity photos feel effortless and natural.
When Should You Book Your Maternity Photoshoot?
One tip I always share: book your session during your second trimester, even though your session will happen in your third trimester.
Booking early gives you:
- More availability for weekends and preferred dates
- Time to plan your outfits, props, and styling
- Peace of mind knowing your session is secured
